North Industries

North Industries team preparing labelled marketplace cartons and direct-to-customer parcels in a Mississauga warehouse.

TL;DR

  • Core choice: Choosing between Amazon FBA and FBM in Canada comes down to who stores and ships: Amazon or you and your 3PL.
  • Prep change: Amazon stopped prepping FBA stock in Canada on July 1, 2026.
  • Added cost: A 3.5% surcharge applies to FBA fulfillment fees.
  • Buy Box access: FBM offers can still win on delivery speed.
  • Hybrid option: Among Amazon seller Canada fulfillment options, many sellers run both.

Canadian Amazon sellers are deciding which model protects margin on each product. The answer depends on product size, how fast stock sells, and margin. Small, light, fast-moving items usually suit FBA, while bulky, slow, or bundled items often suit FBM. Since July 2026, both paths need a prep or fulfillment provider, because Amazon no longer preps Canadian FBA shipments.

At North Industries, we prep FBA shipments and fulfill marketplace orders from our Mississauga warehouse, so the trade-offs below come from handling both.

What is the difference between FBA and FBM on Amazon Canada?

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) means Amazon stores inventory in its fulfillment centres and picks, packs, and ships each order. Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM) means the seller, or a third-party logistics provider (3PL), stores stock and ships orders directly to customers. The choice between FBA and FBM changes costs, control, and who handles returns.

What changed for Amazon FBA sellers in Canada in 2026?

Three Amazon changes reshaped FBA costs and workload for Canadian sellers in 2026. Amazon Canada’s FBA prep ended, a fuel and logistics surcharge was added to FBA fulfillment fees, and a dated holiday peak fee window was set. Each change affects margin and inbound planning in a different way.

Amazon’s notice to Canadian sellers adds that shipments created before July 1 still received Amazon prep, even if they arrived later.

Who preps FBA inventory now that Amazon has stopped?

Every unit sent to a Canadian fulfillment centre must now arrive prepped and labelled, so sellers either prep in-house or use a prep centre. Anyone comparing an FBA prep centre in Ontario should confirm it covers:

  • FNSKU labelling: the Amazon barcode on each unit.
  • Carton labelling: a shipment label on each box.
  • Case packing: units packed to Amazon’s carton rules.
  • Pallet preparation: pallets built for Amazon receiving.
  • Shipment preparation: the inbound load ready before pickup.

How is Amazon’s Canadian fulfillment network different from the US?

Amazon Canada logistics is organized around regional hubs: an Ontario base in the Greater Toronto Area, storage and distribution capacity in British Columbia, and third-party delivery in Quebec since 2025. Canadian sellers should plan inventory around those specific hubs rather than assume US network patterns carry over.

When Amazon announced its Caledon fulfillment centre, the building joined Ontario sites in Brampton, Mississauga, and Milton. In British Columbia, YXX1 in Pitt Meadows is Amazon’s first storage and distribution centre in the province. In Quebec, Amazon closed its warehouses in 2025 and returned to third-party delivery.

When does FBA make more sense for Canadian sellers?

FBA makes more sense for Canadian sellers with small, light, fast-moving products that benefit from the Prime badge. The Amazon FBA fees Canadian sellers pay in 2026 stack in layers, and quick turnover keeps the storage, peak, and removal layers small compared with the sales each unit produces.

  • Fulfillment fee: charged per unit, plus the 3.5% surcharge.
  • Storage: monthly charges while units sit in fulfillment centres.
  • Peak fees: higher rates on units shipped during the holiday window.
  • Removal: charges to pull stalled stock back out.

If removal fees or stockouts keep hitting the same SKUs (individual product variants), move those SKUs to your FBM shortlist.

When does FBM make more sense for Canadian sellers?

FBM makes more sense for Canadian sellers with bulky, slow-moving, seasonal, or multi-channel products. Those products either sit in storage long enough for FBA storage and removal costs to build, or need packaging, bundles, and inserts that sellers want to control. FBM keeps inventory, packaging, and shipping choices with the seller or a 3PL.

  • Oversized items: large or heavy products.
  • Slow movers: stock that sells steadily but not quickly.
  • Long-tail SKUs: variants that each sell a few units.
  • Custom packaging: branded boxes, bundles, or inserts.
  • Seasonal lines: products that sell for part of the year.
  • Multi-channel brands: sellers also running Shopify or another channel.

Can FBM offers still win the Buy Box on Amazon.ca?

Yes. FBM offers can win the Featured Offer, often called the Buy Box. Amazon’s Featured Offer guidance favours faster delivery and shipping at no extra charge, and FBM sellers set their own delivery times and rates. Cancellation and late shipment rates also count, and a professional selling plan is required.

Seller Fulfilled Prime in Canada adds the Prime badge to FBM offers for sellers who pass a trial and assign SKUs to Prime-enabled shipping templates.

Can you use FBA and FBM at the same time?

Yes. Canadian Amazon sellers can run FBA and FBM at the same time, splitting SKUs between the two models. A hybrid FBA and FBM setup places fast movers in Amazon’s network and ships slower or bulkier items from a 3PL, which limits storage exposure while keeping Prime on top sellers.

  • Fast movers in FBA: SKUs that turn quickly and gain from Prime.
  • Long tail on FBM: slow, bulky, or bundled SKUs.
  • FBM as backup: a 3PL ships orders when FBA stock runs out.

A hybrid is simpler to run when one inventory pool feeds FBM orders and Shopify, so stock is counted in one place.

How does Amazon FBM through a 3PL work?

Amazon FBM through a 3PL works by storing inventory at the 3PL’s warehouse, pulling Amazon orders into the 3PL’s system, and having the 3PL pick, pack, label, and ship each order. In an Amazon FBM Canada 3PL setup, tracking is confirmed back to Seller Central so Amazon can see each shipment.

  1. Inventory stored: stock is received and held at the 3PL.
  2. Orders sync: new orders flow from Seller Central.
  3. Pick and pack: staff pick each item and pack the order.
  4. Label applied: a carrier label is printed and attached.
  5. Tracking confirmed: the tracking number returns to Amazon.

If you are weighing whether to hand off shipping entirely, compare this flow with outsourced order fulfillment.

Does FBA or FBM change your GST/HST obligations?

Choosing FBA or FBM mostly does not change a Canadian seller’s GST/HST obligations. The platform-operator rules cover goods held in Canadian fulfillment warehouses, whichever model ships them. Registration depends on taxable sales measured against the small-supplier threshold, not on who picks and packs the order.

Under the Canada Revenue Agency’s e-commerce rules, platform operators collect GST/HST on sales by non-registered vendors of goods held in Canadian fulfillment warehouses. The small-supplier threshold is $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, so a seller doing $20,000 a month has passed it under either model.

Which fulfillment model fits your business?

The right fulfillment model for an Amazon seller depends on each product’s size, sales speed, and packaging needs, not on the catalogue as a whole. Most Amazon seller Canada fulfillment options come down to FBA, FBM, or a hybrid, and sorting SKUs by product profile shows which one fits each part of the catalogue.

How does North Industries support both FBA prep and FBM fulfillment?

North Industries supports both FBA prep and FBM fulfillment from a Mississauga warehouse, so Canadian Amazon sellers can run prep, storage, order fulfillment, and local delivery through one relationship. Sellers who split SKUs between models deal with one operator instead of coordinating a prep centre, a 3PL, and a courier separately.

Inbound starts with container unloading and palletization, then the same stock moves to FBA prep or FBM pick and pack. Seller Central connects through Zoho Inventory, set up per account. We ship with Canada Post, FedEx, UPS, eShipper, and Stallion Express, and our own vehicles handle local and regional delivery. Sellers below the pallet minimums many national 3PLs require can still onboard.

Frequently asked questions

Does FBM cost less than FBA in Canada?

Not automatically. FBM through a 3PL replaces Amazon’s fulfillment and storage fees with the 3PL’s pick and pack, storage, and carrier postage. FBM often suits slow-moving, bulky or multi-item orders. FBA often suits small, fast-moving units. Compare the all-in cost per order for each SKU before switching.

Where are Amazon’s fulfillment centres in Canada?

Amazon’s Ontario network was built around buildings in Brampton, Mississauga, Milton, and Caledon, according to Amazon’s own announcements. In British Columbia, Amazon’s first storage and distribution centre is in Pitt Meadows. Amazon closed its Quebec warehouses in 2025 and moved to third-party delivery there.

Did Amazon raise FBA fees in Canada in 2026?

Yes, through a surcharge. Since April 17, 2026, Amazon has added a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge to FBA fulfillment fees in Canada, calculated on the fee rather than the sale price. Holiday peak fees also apply to units shipped between October 15, 2026, and January 14, 2027.

How fast can a 3PL ship Amazon FBM orders?

Speed depends on the order cut-off, handling time, and carrier agreed for each account, so it varies between 3PLs. Amazon weighs delivery speed and performance, including cancellation and late shipment rates, when selecting the Featured Offer. Ask any 3PL how orders sync from Seller Central and how tracking returns to Amazon.

Do FBM listings get the Prime badge on Amazon.ca?

Not by default. FBM offers show the Prime badge only through Seller Fulfilled Prime, which Amazon.ca sellers join by passing a trial and assigning SKUs to Prime-enabled shipping templates. Check the current Seller Fulfilled Prime requirements for Canada in Seller Central before planning around the badge.

What is Remote Fulfillment with FBA?

Remote Fulfillment with FBA lets sellers serve Canadian customers from inventory held in US FBA centres, without stocking Canadian fulfillment centres. Since April 17, 2026, Amazon’s 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge also applies to Remote Fulfillment orders shipped from the US into Canada.
